Department of Medical Genetics

tehostekuvaMedical genetics research and training takes place at Biomedicum Helsinki, across the street from the Institute.

Medical genetics involves the study and identification of hereditary disorders and their genes. By conducting functional studies of identified alleles, the aim is to identify the causes of diseases and to develop new diagnostic tests to meet the needs of healthcare.

A number of research groups located at Biomedicum Helsinki and funded by the Faculty and the Academy of Finland work closely together, including those of the Molecular Medicine, Molecular Neurology, Molecular Cancer Biology, Infection Biology and Women's Health research programmes as well as the Folkhälsan Research Center, the National Institute for Health and Welfare, and the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland.

Medical Genetics is affiliated with Helsinki University Central Hospital (HUCH) and the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa, which together serve the area population of around 1.4 million people, and in the case of certain rare diseases, cover the whole of Finland. The results of gene research find immediate applications in patient diagnostics and genetic counselling for patients and their families. The department works collaboratively with a number of the specialised genetics laboratories located on Meilahti Campus.
